How Much Does Couples Counseling Cost in San Antonio? Is It Worth It?

If you've been considering couples counseling in San Antonio, chances are you've asked yourself, "Is it really worth the money?"
And honestly, it's a fair question.
Therapy is an investment of your time, money, and emotional energy. When you're already juggling work, family, bills, and everything else life throws your way, adding another expense isn't always an easy decision.
As a couples counselor, I understand that. And while I believe counseling can be incredibly valuable, I also believe couples should understand what they're investing in before getting started.
How Much Does Couples Counseling Cost in San Antonio?
Couples counseling, sometimes called couples therapy or marriage counseling, is $150 per 50-minute session with me. I also offer a free 15-minute consultation first, so you can ask questions and see whether we're a good fit before spending anything.
I'm a private-pay, out-of-network provider, which means I don't bill insurance directly. If you'd like to seek reimbursement, I'm happy to provide a detailed reimbursement form at no cost that you can submit to your insurance company. Reimbursement depends on your plan, so it's worth checking your out-of-network benefits first.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
Have you ever heard the saying, "You can't see the forest for the trees"?
I think that describes what happens in a lot of relationships.
When you're in the middle of an argument or dealing with the same frustrations over and over, it can be difficult to step back and see what's actually happening.
That's where having a third-party perspective can be helpful.
My role isn't to decide who's right or wrong. It's to help couples recognize patterns, understand each other's perspectives, and make sense of what's happening in their relationship.
Sometimes that means exploring how childhood experiences, family dynamics, or past relationships influence the way we show up in our marriages today.
We all bring our own pieces into a relationship. Sometimes we just need someone to help us figure out how those pieces fit together.
It's About More Than Communication
One of the biggest improvements I see in couples therapy is communication. But I'm not just talking about learning to use "I-statements" or taking turns talking.
I'm talking about becoming comfortable enough to be vulnerable with your partner.
Being able to say, "That really hurt my feelings," without worrying that it's going to turn into an argument. Or being able to hear your partner share something difficult without immediately getting defensive.
One of my favorite things to witness is when couples begin recognizing and changing their own patterns.
Here's a simple example.
Think about the last time you apologized to your spouse. Did it sound something like this?
"I'm sorry, but you have to understand why I reacted that way."
We've probably all done it.
The problem is that the word "but" can quickly undo the apology. Instead of acknowledging your partner's experience, you're now defending your own.
When couples begin recognizing those little habits and changing them without my help, that's progress.
And those small changes can make a big difference.
How Long Does Couples Counseling Take in San Antonio?
This is one of the most common questions I get, especially when couples are considering the financial commitment.
I typically use working out as an analogy.
If you go to the gym once a month, you probably shouldn't expect the same results as someone who's consistently showing up and putting in the work.
Counseling is similar.
For many couples, I generally recommend weekly sessions for three to four months, transitioning to biweekly sessions for another three to four months, and eventually moving into maintenance sessions as needed.
Of course, every couple is different.
I always let my clients know that the frequency of sessions is ultimately their decision. I never want someone to feel pressured into scheduling more frequently than they're comfortable with.
I recognize that counseling is an investment, and I respect that.
When Is Couples Counseling Not Worth the Money?
Here's something I think is important to say.
Couples counseling may not be worth the investment if you're not willing to put in the work.
I can provide tools, offer perspective, and help guide difficult conversations. But I can't make changes in your relationship for you.
If you're consistently missing appointments, unwilling to practice what we discuss, or expecting your partner to do all the changing, you're probably going to be disappointed with the results.
And I don't want that for you.
The real progress often happens outside of my office, in those everyday moments when you have an opportunity to respond differently than you normally would.
Counseling gives you the tools. What you do with them matters.
So, Is Couples Counseling Worth It?
I wish there were a simple yes-or-no answer.
The truth is, what makes counseling worthwhile looks different for every couple.
For some, success means learning how to communicate without every disagreement turning into an argument. For others, it means rebuilding trust, feeling connected again, or understanding each other in ways they haven't before.
I work with each couple to determine what success looks like for them.
And here's something I often remind couples who are trying to decide whether to start counseling.
Either decision may be hard.
Making time for counseling, spending the money, being vulnerable, and changing old habits? That's hard.
But continuing to experience the same frustrations, feeling disconnected, or wondering whether things will ever improve? That can be hard, too.
You get to choose which hard you're willing to work through.
Counseling doesn't guarantee a particular outcome, but it can give you the opportunity to approach your relationship with a different perspective and some new tools.
Still Have Questions About Couples Counseling?
If you're considering couples counseling but aren't sure whether it's right for you, I encourage you to ask questions.
Seriously. Ask away.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation because I want couples to feel comfortable with the process before making a financial commitment.
And if you need an in-network provider for your insurance, I'm happy to point you toward other resources.
My goal isn't to convince every couple that they need to work with me. It's to help people find the support that's right for them.
